Rhinoplasty

Aesthetic rhinoplasty

As a rule, corrective procedures involving the nasal framework can be performed once the growth phase has ended, i.e. after the age of 17.

A broad range of corrective procedures is possible in the field of rhinoplasty. Every nose is unique and therefore must be considered in light of its distinctive characteristics. Standardised operations usually produce only modest results, hence it is important that a precise analysis of the patient’s expectations and anatomical characteristics be performed in consultation with the patient. For this purpose, Dr Hundt employs computer simulation, which allows patients to see the planned results pre-operatively and produces printouts that patients can take home with them.

Apart from the long humped noses frequently encountered, which can be corrected by removing bone and cartilage from the bridge of the nose, many noses are too wide or project at an unattractive angle to the upper lip. Many others are crooked or asymmetrical. If nasal breathing is obstructed as well, as is often the case, additional corrective procedures must be performed in deeper parts of the nose.

In all but exceptional cases, the operation is performed under full anaesthesia. Depending on the patient’s constitution, the operation may be performed on an in-patient basis (with a stay of 3 to 4 days) or out-patient basis. The incision is made inside the nose so that no scarring can be seen from the outside. After bony portions are excised, a nose cast must be worn for approximately seven days, after which an adhesive tape is worn for another week. Patients are socially presentable and able to return to work after about two weeks.

Functional rhinoplasty

In many cases, the aesthetic factors mentioned above may also obstruct nasal breathing. Some operations, such as nasal septum, turbinate reduction, and paranasal sinus operations, can be performed during the same surgical session.

Non-surgical rhinoplasty

For smaller humps or smaller “saddle nose” deformities, treatment may take the form of injecting agents that simply fill in uneven areas of the nose. This treatment is performed with a filler, which produces results that last approximately two years.
